A complete lesson (mini-unit), which includes how to teach simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentence structures.  Teaching the types of sentences can be difficult but this lesson simplifies and scaffolds the approach to a more manageable lesson by incorporating a real world assignment.  Designed for grades 7-9, you could easily adapt to include 5th and 6th graders.
